The senior men’s squad were in action on Saturday at the National Championships at a very muddy Wollaton Park.

The squad was stronger than for the Southern Champs with hopes high of a podium finish and a chance of regaining the title won for the first time in 2014. At the end of the small starting loop of one kilometre hopes of a medal seemed remote with no Bedford runners in the top 50 of the field of 2000. But initial pessimism began to fade as the runners completed the first of the 3 larger laps. Jack Goodwin and Darren Deed had moved into the top 35 and Will Mackay and Matt Bergin were inside the top 50. A little further back John Eves, Richard Henderson and Steve Naylor were moving through the field. Michael Henderson,Jack Douglas and Josh Lunn were edging closer to the top 100. With 2 miles to go, the chances of a medal were looking better, but it was obvious that the medals could go to any one of 6 clubs. Tonbridge AC looked clear winners with 5 runners well up. Our scoring 6 were now all in the top 80 but with just 2 athletes in the top 30 our chances of a medal still seemed to be in the lap of the gods.  As the runners flooded into the finish the team scores were eagerly awaited. Bedford had Jack Goodwin in 27th, Darren Deed 28th, John Eves 46th, Will Mackay 63rd, Steve Naylor 66th and Jack Douglas 74th. We were the first team to close in 6 runners and had 10 runners in front of Tonbridge’s 6th man, but with 5 runners in the top 41 Tonbridge took the title with 289 points, to Morpeth Harriers 293 and Bedford’s 304.
